What is XRP?
XRP is the native cryptocurrency of the XRP Ledger. It is used to facilitate cross-border payments. It has also been designed to offer a real-time gross settlement system (RTGS), asset exchange, and remittance network.
XRP is unique in the way that it’s a pre-mined currency. Unlike other cryptocurrencies, 100 billion XRP tokens were already created on its launch, with no way of creating more. Ripple Labs holds a large portion of XRP tokens which are released to the market periodically. Any XRP that is not in circulation is stored in escrow.
Faster and cheaper settlements
XRP is designed to settle fast and cheap transactions. It runs on the XRP Ledger (XRPL) blockchain, which operates differently than most cryptocurrencies. It uses a consensus system where validators verify transactions by comparing the information they receive according to the same rules. This will solve the double spending problem and improve the system’s integrity to become faster, cheaper, and more energy-efficient.
Another aspect of XRPL’s speed is its hashing algorithm called HashTree. It doesn’t need to compare every piece of information in the ledger. Instead, it verifies transactions by comparing a single value that condenses all the data in the ledger. As a result, XRPL accomplishes transaction settlements in about three seconds.
